The first Tisha b’Av Having been freed from slavery and experiencing Signs and Wonders on the way to the Promised Land, they are now poised to enter. The 12 Spies return on the eighth day of Av from 40 days in Israel – 10 Spies report that the land is unconquerable. That night, the 9th of Av, the people cry and give up their dream of going into Israel. They insist that they’d rather go back and give up hope of entering the Land. G-d is highly displeased by this public demonstration of distrust in His power, and consequently that generation of Israelites never enters the Holy Land. Only their children have that privilege, after wandering in the desert for another 38 years. That night was Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av. God declared: “They cried for no reason; in the future I’ll give them good reason to cry.” So, the 9th of Av becomes a Day of horror and destruction for them throughout Israel’s history to this day.
