We are still camping along the Way, absorbing the renewed realizations (Chiddushim) gained in the first few Parshiyot of the new year 5782 (Oct. 2021 to Oct. 2022) (Refer our Newsletters – The Final Call, and What is the ‘Messiah’ all about? ).
We saw this year how that the first 3 weekly Readings:
Lech Lecha, taken together, reflect the Redemption Plan of the Creator for humanity, viz. the perfecting of mankind in His full Image, to serve as a Living Temple for Him to dwell in and rule over the nations. And how the Nations will come to serve these ruling saints (Kidushim, Tsacikim) as God.
Then, Parashat Vayeira (and He appeared;) – how does this fit into this renewed confirmation of the Final Redemption which we are now heading for? Is this linkage to Redemption simply broken here, applying to a non-related area, or is there a Link also to Redemption – a link we may have missed before and that few people see? While meditating on this renewed and broader insight, continuing confirmations have been coming across our table which now threatens to really open a bombshell consideration!
In fact, if true, this insight may well move us miles closer to the vitally required reconciliation in the Israel Family Feud of 2700 years now. For it addresses the great friction between Judaism and Christianity where the major proportion of the exiled House of 10-Israel is captured in the Church. The Final Redemption requires a 2nd Exodus, this time from the far corners of the earth. As in the 1st exodus from Egypt where they were captured in pagan beliefs, this time, coming mainly from the Church, they have been captured in an anti-Torah religious culture with many practices and theologies derived from the pagan cultures amongst which the Church evolved.
The main stumbling block preventing reconciliation between Judaism and the Church, is the Christian interpretation of their Messiah as divine, the Almighty God Himself. Jewish theology just cannot and will not entertain such a concept for “God is not a man”, and “cannot be seen”. Does Parashat Vayera (and He appeared’), so soon after the 1st 3 Redemption setting Parashiyot perhaps suggest a link in this direction?
Vayeira – what does it mean?
Like all Parashiyot, its name comes from the opening words of that Reading section for the week, as determined according to a set program, ages ago by Jewish sages. Vayeira means “…and he appeared.”
The Parashah comes from Gen. 18:1
Now, in Judaism this cannot be! How did Avraham react?
Gen. 18:2 “and (Avraham) lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men (‘anashim’ – people) stood over against him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed down to the earth.
3 and said: ‘My lord (Adoni), if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant.” Note, he addresses the three men as singular.
The conversation continues through to verse 15, with the written text stating that HaShem (by His 4-letter Name) speaking, promises Sarah that she will have a child.
16 “And the men rose up from thence, and looked out toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.”
20 And HaShem said: ‘Verily, the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and, verily, their sin is exceeding grievous. 21I will go down now, and see … “
22 And the men turned from thence, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before HaShem…”
Then develops an entire discussion between God and Avraham re. the intended destruction of Sodom. Throughout Avraham renders great respect, realizing that he is arguing directly with HaShem,
33And HaShem went His way, as soon as He had left off speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned unto his place.
The story then continues:
Gen. 19:1 “And the twoangels came to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom; and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he fell down on his face to the earth;
2 and he said: ‘Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant’s house,.…”
What follows is that men from the entire Sodom intruded with intent to sodomize the ‘visitors’ – with Lot even offering his two virgin daughters to be raped by them rather than molesting the ‘visitors’. A strange observation is then texted in verse:
19 “And they the Sodomites) said, Stand back. This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he wants to play the judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.” – Note that mixture between singular and plural again, depicting a mysterious appearance (Vaiyera).
The ‘visitors’ drew Lot inside with them and struck the crowd with blindness. Then ordered Lot to evacuate with his family because God was going to destroy the city after that audacious attempt to sodomize the visitors!
Finally. On their way out of Sodom, the next morning:
24 “Then HaShem (the visitors?) caused to rain upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire fromHaShem out of heaven;”
Judaism declares this Event as “The appearance of the Angel (Messenger?) of HaShem.” Such appearances re-occur several times in the Torah. Each of these Scriptural records confirm the visible Appearance of God by His 4-letter Name (we use ‘HaShem’ = ‘The Name’ in our renderings here:
In Gan Eden – Gen. 3:8,9 “And they heard the Voice of HaShem God walking in the Garden (of Eden) in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the Presence of HaShem God amongst the trees of the Garden”.
At Tower of Babel – Gen.11:5-7 “And HaShem came down to see the city and the tower …And HaShem said… `Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language.”
Unto Avraham – Gen. 12:7 “And HaShem appeared unto Avraham… (Vayeira).” To pronounce the Blessing of countless multitudes of nations (Gentiles) to be his descendants.
Unto Hagar – Gen. 16:7) …. The Angel of HaShem also said to her, ‘I will greatly multiply your descendants’ (v. 10)…. So she called the Name of HaShem Who spoke to her: ‘THOU ART A GOD OF SEEING’, for she said, ‘Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing Him?’ ” (v.13).
His Appearance to Jacob– Gen. 32:24-30; Hosea. 12:2-5
“And Jacob was left alone and there WRESTLED A MAN with him.” (v.24). Who was this Man? The prophet Hosea in chap.12:4 reveals the matter to us. “He (Jacob) wrestled with the Angel and beat Him… ” Yet, at the same time this “Man” or “Angel” was God Himself. This astounding fact is revealed by the wrestling Angel Himself in Gen. 32:28. “…because you have been strong against God, you shall prevail against men” Jacob then extorts a blessing from Him and exclaims: “I have seen God face to face and yet my life is preserved”
His Appearance to Israel in Exodus – Ex. 23:20-23; Ex. 3:7-22; Numb. 14:13-35
Confirming that the “Angel of HaShem” led them out of Egypt. The Scriptures reveal that it was the Almighty Himself. “And when we cried to HaShem, He heard our voice, and sent an Angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt .. ” (Num. 20:16). “Moreover He said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob… I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians….. Ex 3:6,8. “Behold I send an Angel before thee… ” (Ex. 23:20-22).
“And HaShem went before them by day in a Pillar of a Cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a Pillar of Fire, to give them light” (Ex. 13:21). (See also Ex.19:9, Deut. 1:33; 5;22; Ex.16:10).
His Appearance unto Moses – Ex. 3:2-17 “And the Angel of HaShem appeared unto him in a Flame of Fire out of the midst of a bush … when he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush and said (v.4) I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God …” And again in Ex. 24:9 “Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Avihu and seventy elders of Israel. They saw the God of Israel … they gazed on God.”
His Appearance on Mt Sinai with His Angels – Ex.19:1-25; 20:1-26
“And Moses went up unto God, and HaShem called unto him out of the mountain saying . . .(Ex.19:3). . . `Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud . . . `” (Ps. 68:17). “For on the third day HaShem will come down upon Mt. Sinai in the sight of all the people” (Ex.19:11).
His Appearance in the Tent Tabernacle in the Wilderness – Ex. 33; Num. 12
Moses regularly entered the Tabernacle while the nation observed the Cloud coming down thereon. “Thus HaShem used to speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend.” (Ex. 33:11). The Eternal Himself confirms this in Num. 12:8, “With him (Moses) I speak mouth to mouth … and he beholds the form of HaShem”- as opposed to speaking to prophets in visions. (v.6).
His Appearance to Joshua – Joshua 5: “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him: ‘Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?’ Joshua 5:13. “And he said: ‘Nay, but I am captain of the host of HaShem; … And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said unto him: ‘What saith My Lord unto his servant?’ Joshua 5:14.“15 And the captain of HaShem’S host said unto Joshua: ‘Put off thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy.’ “
His Appearance to Samson’s Parents – Judges 13:1-22 “And the Angel of HaShem appeared…(v.3)… Behold, the Man has appeared unto me…(v.10)…And Manoah said unto the Angel of HaShem, `What is Thy Name?’ (v.17). And the Angel of HaShem said (v.18) ‘Why askest thou thus after My Name? It is “Wonderful” (‘Pheleh’). And Manoah said unto his wife, `We shall surely die, because we have seen God’” (v.22).
His Appearance to Samuel – 1 Sam. 3:21 “And HaShem appeared again in Shiloh: for HaShem revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the Word of HaShem” (1 Sam. 3:21).
His Appearance to Gideon– Judges 6“And the Angel of HaShem appeared to him”, (Judges. 6:12). Gideon asked for a sign that it was really the Almighty who was speaking to him (v.17), whereupon Gideon’s sacrifice was consumed by a bolt of fire. “…and the Angelvanished from his sight (v.21)…and Gideon said, ‘Alas O Lord God, for now I have seen the Angel of HaShem face to face’. But HaShem said to him, ‘do not fear, you shall not die.’” (v.22, 23).
His Appearance in Solomon’s Temple – “And the Word of HaShem came to Solomon, saying, ‘Concerning this House which you are building… I will dwell among the children of Israel… So Solomon built the house and finished it” (1 Kings 6:11-14).
“the House was filled with a cloud, even the House of HaShem… for the Glory of HaShem had filled the House of God’” (2 Chron. 5:13-14).
General conclusion in Judaism
Judaism does not accept that these Appearances can possibly be by HaShem Himself and it is accepted as appearances of “An Angel” or Messenger of HaShem.
Judaism vehemently therefore rejects the assumed Christian teaching that their NT Messiah is an Incarnation of God Himself in the shape of a human – though, paradoxically, this is the one thing that 99% of Christianity does NOT accept, even if that is the general proclamation that it does teach. Ask any Christian if “Jesus may be sitting ON the Throne as God” – and they will deny it vehemently with all sorts of definitions of how Jesus is “the Son of God”, etc. etc, The few small denominations that do teach that “Jesus is on the Throne” number less than 1% of the 40,000 denominations of Christianity in the World and are rejected by all of Christianity as “Jesus ONLY” false believers! Note, that the name ‘Jesus’ itself is a name that does not exist in Judaism and that such purported ‘Jewish Messiah’ could not ever have been called by! Consternation! – on both sides of the contending factions in the Family of HaShem!
Let us further meditate on the possible Link between the first 3 Parshiyot with their powerful Redemption Message and the 4th Parashat Vayeira. In the process let us consider the following observation:
It is noteworthy in this consideration, that the Final Book of the Tanach bears the name Malachi (‘My Angel’) … we have here above reviewed how ” He appeared as an ANGEL?” Now note the Message of the final chapter of the Tanach:
Would it now be absurd to make the conjecture that HaShem is going to appear, visibly coming to His Temple? After all, is this not what the Rabbis teachabout theReturn of the Shechinah (visible Presence) of HaShem to Return to His Temple? This Shechinah left the World to join the exiles, we are told, at the time of the destruction of the First Temple (Ezekiel 10 describes this departure of the Shechinah). It has not returned yet – the 2nd Temple was devoid of His Shechinah – so, it must point forward to the Final Redemption when Scripture claims that He will indwell a Living Temple of souls who will serve as the Temple for Him to live amongst His people.
Can this be the link between the first 3 and the 4th Parashah? Can it be that, after the first 3 Parshiyot which describe the Final Redemption Plan of the Creator God Who will be perfecting man in His Image, that the 4th Parashat Vayeira now possibly serves to prepare us for accepting the awesome reality of HaShem to visibly appear to mankind? This time manifesting Himself to the World through His own human creation – who will become a Living human Temple for Him? Can the coming of the ‘Malach’ of HaShem that the Book of Malachi confirms, possibly be HaShem Himself – a Manifestation of Him to ‘prepare the Way before the Coming of HaShem Himself?
Is there a link to “The Mashiach” here?
May these messages assist in promoting the Unity to advance and proceed the Final Redemption (Geulah} – the Time Period of which it seems that we are now entering towards the end of this 6th Millennium – the Time of Trouble, birth pangs of the Shabbat Millennium with all its Blessings ..
Wishing you HaShem’s richest Blessings!
